His verb (philotimeomai) in the classics meant ‘to be ambitious’, but later ‘to strive eagerly’, ‘to seek restlessly’, pointing to a wholehearted and energetic pursuit of the object (cf. Rom. 15:20; 2 Cor. 5:9, its only other New Testament occurrences). It may well have this meaning here.
