Adam introduced the notion of human autonomy and with it the rationalist-irrationalist synthesis that has marked all human thought that is not redeemed by Christ. Socrates exemplifies this fact clearly. There are two purely contradictory statements that must on this apostate view, be made about reality as a whole. In the first place all reality must be one in the sense that it is a static whole. If this were not so then man would not understand his own freedom. To understand is, on this view, to
