This was another assurance that the promises of God were good. The names are firstfruits, as it were, of the great nation to follow. The chapter’s last report concerns Jacob’s return to his father, Isaac, which was soon followed by the death of Isaac at the age of 180 (35:27–29). This is the third transitional death in the chapter. Isaac was living at the time near Hebron. Jacob and Esau came together to bury him. Perhaps this was the first time the two had met since the reconciliation (33:16–17).
