The reference to the disciples’ fear of the Jews as motive for the locked doors may have been added by the Evangelist; the greeting of Jesus is then the more significant: “Peace to you!” It is well known that that was (and still is) the everyday greeting of Jews in Palestine—“Shalom to you!” But this was no ordinary day. Von Rad wrote, “Seldom do we find in the Old Testament a word which to the same degree as shalom can bear a common use, and yet can also be filled with the concentrated religious
