2 Oh that my agrief were throughly weighed,
And my aacalamity †laid in the balances together!
3 For now it would be heavier than bthe sand of the sea:
Therefore ||my words care swallowed up.
4 For dthe arrows of the Almighty are within me,
The poison whereof drinketh up my spirit:
eThe terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.
5 Doth the fwild ass bray †when he hath grass?
Or loweth the ox over his gfodder?
6 Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt?
Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
7 The things that my soul refused to touch
Are as my sorrowful meat.
8 Oh that I might have hmy request;
And that God would grant me †the thing that I long for!
9 Even that iit would please God to jdestroy me;
That he would let loose his hand, and kcut me off!
10 Then should I yet have comfort;
Yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: llet him not spare;
For I have not mconcealed mmthe words of nthe Holy One.
11 What is my strength, that I should hope?
And what is mine end, that I should oprolong my life?
12 Is my strength the strength of stones?
Or is my flesh †of brass?
And is pwisdom driven quite from me?
14 †To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed qfrom his friend;
But he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.
15 My brethren rhave dealt deceitfully as a brook,
And sas the stream of brooks they pass away;
16 Which are blackish by reason of the ice,
And wherein the snow is hid:
17 What time they wax warm, †they vanish:
†When it is hot, they are †consumed out of their place.
18 The paths of their way tare turned aside;
They go to unothing, and perish.
19 The troops of xTema looked,
The companies of ySheba waited for them.
20 They were zconfounded because they had hoped;
They came thither, and were zashamed.
Ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
Or, Give a reward for me of your asubstance?
23 Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand?
Or, Redeem me from the hand of the bmighty?
24 Teach me, and I will hold my tongue:
And cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
25 How cforcible are right words!
But what doth your arguing reprove?
26 Do ye imagine to reprove words,
And the speeches of one that is ddesperate, which are as wind?
27 Yea, †ye overwhelm the fatherless,
And ye edig a pit for your friend.
28 Now therefore be content, flook upon me;
For it is †evident unto you if I lie.
29 gReturn, I pray you, let it not be iniquity;
Yea, return again, my righteousness is ||in it.
7 Is there not ||an appointed time to man upon earth?
Are not his days also alike the days of an hireling?
2 As a servant †earnestly desireth bthe shadow,
And as an hireling looketh for cthe reward of his work:
3 So am I made to possess dmonths of evanity,
And wearisome nights are appointed to me.
4 eeWhen I lie down, I say,
When shall I arise, and †the night be gone?
And I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day.
5 My flesh is clothed with fworms and clods of dust;
My skin is broken, and gbecome loathsome.
6 My days are swifter than ha weaver’s shuttle,
And are spent without hope.
7 O remember that my life is iwind:
Mine eye †shall no more ||see good.
8 kThe eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more:
Thine eyes are upon me, and ||I am not.
9 As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away:
So he that lgoeth down to the grave shall come up no more.
10 mHe shall return no more to his house,
nNeither shall khis place know him any more.
11 Therefore I will not refrain my mouth;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit;
I will ocomplain pin the bitterness of my soul.
That thou settest a watch over me?
13 qWhen I say, My bed shall comfort me,
My couch shall rease my ocomplaint;
14 sThen thou scarest me with dreams,
And terrifiest me through visions:
15 So that my soul chooseth strangling,
And death rather †than my life.
16 I tloathe it; I would not live alway:
uLet me alone; for my days are xvanity.
17 yWhat is man, that thou shouldest magnify him?
And that thou shouldest zset thine heart upon him?
18 And that thou shouldest visit him aevery morning,
And try him bevery moment?
19 How long wilt thou not cdepart from me,
Nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?
20 I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee,
O thou dpreserver of men?
Why hast thou set me as a emark against thee,
So that I am a burden to myself?
21 And why dost thou not pardon my transgression,
And take away mine iniquity?
For now shall I sleep in the dust;
And thou shalt fseek me in the morning, but I shall not be.
8 Then answered aBildad the Shuhite, and said,
2 How long wilt thou speak these things?
And how long shall the words of thy mouth be like ba strong wind?
3 cDoth God pervert judgment?
Or ddoth the Almighty pervert justice?
4 If ethy children have sinned against him,
And he have cast them away †for their transgression;
5 fIf thou wouldest gseek unto God betimes,
And make thy supplication to the Almighty;
6 If thou wert pure and upright;
Surely now he would awake for thee,
And make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.
7 Though thy beginning was small,
Yet thy latter end should greatly increase.
8 hFor inquire, I pray thee, of the former age,
And prepare thyself to the search of their fathers:
9 (For iwe are but of yesterday, and know †nothing,
Because our days upon earth are ja shadow:)
10 Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee,
And utter words out of their heart?
11 Can the krush grow up without mire?
Can the lflag grow without water?
12 mWhilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down,
It withereth before any other herb.
13 So are the paths of all that forget God;
And the nhypocrite’s hope shall perish:
14 Whose hope shall be cut off,
And whose trust shall be †a spider’s web.
15 He shall lean upon ohis house, but it shall not stand:
He shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.
16 He is pgreen before the sun,
And his qbranch shooteth forth in his garden.
17 His roots are rwrapped about the heap,
And seeth the place of stones.
18 If he destroy him sfrom his place,
Then it shall deny him, tsaying, I have not seen thee.
19 Behold, this is the joy of his way,
And uout of the earth shall others grow.
20 Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man,
Neither will he †help the evil doers:
21 Till he xfill thy mouth with laughing,
And thy lips with †rejoicing.
22 They that hate thee shall be yclothed with shame;
And the zdwelling place of the wicked †shall come to nought.
