God’s Love Is Eternal

5 He made the heavens skillfully. j

8 the sun to rule by day,

His love is eternal.

9 the moon and stars to rule by night. m

10 He struck the firstborn of the Egyptians n

11 and brought Israel out from among them

12 with a strong hand and outstretched arm. o

15 but hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea. r

Psalm 137

Lament of the Exiles

1 By the rivers of Babylon—

there we sat down and wept

when we remembered * Zion. y

2 There we hung up our lyres

on the poplar trees, z

3 for our captors there asked us for songs,

and our tormentors, for rejoicing:

“Sing us one of the songs of Zion.” a

4 How can we sing the Lord’s song

on foreign soil? b

5 If I forget you, Jerusalem,

may my right hand forget its skill. c

6 May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth

if I do not remember you,

if I do not exalt Jerusalem as my greatest joy! d

7 Remember, Lord, what the Edomites said

that day e at Jerusalem:

“Destroy it! Destroy it

down to its foundations!” f

8 Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,

happy is the one who pays you back

what you have done to us. g

9 Happy is he who takes your little ones

and dashes them against the rocks. h

Psalm 138

A Thankful Heart

1 I will give You thanks with all my heart; i

I will sing Your praise before the heavenly beings. j k

2 I will bow down toward Your holy temple

and give thanks to Your name

for Your constant love and truth.

You have exalted Your name

and Your promise above everything else. l

3 On the day I called, You answered me;

You increased strength within me. m n

4 All the kings on earth will give You thanks, Lord,

when they hear what You have promised. o p

5 They will sing of the Lord’s ways,

for the Lord’s glory is great. q

6 Though the Lord is exalted,

He takes note of the humble;

but He knows the haughty from a distance. r

7 If I walk into the thick of danger,

You will preserve my life

from the anger of my enemies. s

You will extend Your hand;

Your right hand will save me. t

8 The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me. u

Lord, Your love is eternal;

do not abandon the work of Your hands. v

Psalm 139

The All-Knowing, Ever-Present God

1 Lord, You have searched me and known me. w

2 You know when I sit down and when I stand up;

You understand my thoughts from far away. x

3 You observe my travels and my rest;

You are aware of all my ways. y

4 Before a word is on my tongue,

You know all about it, Lord. z

5 You have encircled me;

You have placed Your hand on me. a

6 This extraordinary knowledge is beyond me.

It is lofty; I am unable to reach it. b

7 Where can I go to escape Your Spirit?

Where can I flee from Your presence? c

8 If I go up to heaven, You are there; d

if I make my bed in * Sheol, You are there. e

9 If I live at the eastern horizon

or settle at the western limits, f

10 even there Your hand will lead me;

Your right hand will hold on to me. g

11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me,

and the light around me will be night” h—

12 even the darkness is not dark to You.

The night shines like the day;

darkness and light are alike to You. i

13 For it was You who created my inward parts; j

You knit me together in my mother’s womb. k

14 I will praise You

because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. l m

Your works are wonderful,

and I know this very well. n

15 My bones were not hidden from You

when I was made in secret,

when I was formed in the depths of the earth. o

16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless;

all my days were written in Your book and planned

before a single one of them began. p

17 God, how difficult q Your thoughts are

for me to comprehend;

how vast their sum is!

18 If I counted them,

they would outnumber the grains of sand; r

when I wake up, s I am still with You. t

19 God, if only You would kill the wicked—

you bloodthirsty men, stay away from me u—

20 who invoke You deceitfully.

Your enemies swear by You falsely. v

21 Lord, don’t I hate those who hate You,

and detest those who rebel against You?

22 I hate them with extreme hatred;

I consider them my enemies. w

23 Search me, God, and know my heart;

test me and know my concerns. x

24 See if there is any offensive y way in me;

lead me in the everlasting way. z

Prayer for Rescue

1 Rescue me, Lord, from evil men.

Keep me safe from violent men a

2 who plan evil in their hearts.

They stir up wars all day long. b

3 They make their tongues

as sharp as a snake’s bite;

viper’s venom is under their lips. c * Selah

4 Protect me, Lord,

from the clutches of the wicked. d

Keep me safe from violent men

who plan to make me stumble. e f

5 The proud hide a trap with ropes for me;

they spread a net along the path

and set snares for me. g Selah

6 I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”

Listen, Lord, to my cry for help. h

7 Lord God, my strong Savior,

You shield my head on the day of battle. i

8 Lord, do not grant the desires of the wicked;

do not let them achieve their goals.

Otherwise, they will become proud. j Selah

9 When those who surround me rise up, k

may the trouble their lips cause overwhelm them. l

10 Let hot coals fall on them.

Let them be thrown into the fire,

into the abyss, never again to rise. m

11 Do not let a slanderer stay in the land.

Let evil relentlessly n hunt down a violent man. o

12 I p know that the Lord upholds

the just cause of the poor,

justice for the needy. q

13 Surely the righteous will praise Your name;

the upright will live in Your presence. r
