48 “Listen to this, house of Jacob—
those who are called by the name Israel
and have descended fromB Judah,o
who swear by the name of the Lordp
and declare the God of Israel,
but not in truth or righteousness.
2 For they are named after the holy city,
and lean on the God of Israel;q
his name is the Lord of Armies.
3 I declared the past events long ago;
they came out of my mouth; I proclaimed them.
Suddenly I acted, and they occurred.
4 Because I know that you are stubborn,
and your neck is ironA
and your forehead bronze,a
5 therefore I declared to you long ago.
I announced it to you before it occurred,
so you could not claim, ‘My idol caused them;
my carved image and cast idol control them.’b
6 You have heard it. Observe it all.
Will you not acknowledge it?
From now on I will announce new things to you,
hidden things that you have not known.c
7 They have been created now, and not long ago;
you have not heard of them before today,
so you could not claim, ‘I already knew them!’
8 You have never heard; you have never known;
for a long time your ears have not been open.
For I knew that you were very treacherous,
and were known as a rebel from birth.d
9 I will delay my anger for the sake of my name,
and I will restrain myself for your benefit and for my praise,
so that you will not be destroyed.
10 Look, I have refined you,e but not as silver;
I have testedB you in the furnace of affliction.
11 I will act for my own sake, indeed, my own,f
for how can IC be defiled?
I will not give my glory to another.g
and Israel, the one called by me:
I am he; I am the first,
I am also the last.h
13 My own hand founded the earth,
and my right hand spread out the heavens;i
when I summoned them,
they stood up together.
14 All of you, assemble and listen!
Who among the idolsD has declared these things?
The Lord loves him;E
he will accomplish his will against Babylon,j
and his arm will be against the Chaldeans.
yes, I have called him;k
I have brought him,
and he will succeed in his mission.l
16 Approach me and listen to this.
From the beginning I have not spoken in secret;m
from the time anything existed, I was there.”
And now the Lord God
has sent me and his Spirit.n
17 This is what the Lord, your Redeemer,o the Holy One of Israelp says:
I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you for your benefit,
who leads you in the way you should go.
18 If only you had paid attention to my commands.
Then your peace would have been like a river,q
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.r
19 Your descendants would have been as countless as the sand,s
and the offspring of your body like its grains;
their name would not be cut off
or eliminated from my presence.
flee from the Chaldeans!
Declare with a shout of joy,
proclaim this,
let it go out to the end of the earth;
announce,
“The Lord has redeemed his servantt Jacob!”
when he led them through the deserts;
he made water flow from the rock for them;u
he split the rock, and water gushed out.
22 “There is no peace for the wicked,” says the Lord.v
49 Coasts and islands,A listen to me;
distant peoples, pay attention.
The Lord calleda me before I was born.
He named me while I was in my mother’s womb.b
2 He made my words like a sharp sword;c
he hid me in the shadow of his hand.d
He made me like a sharpened arrow;
he hid me in his quiver.
3 He said to me, “You are my servant,e
Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”
4 But I myself said: I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and futility;
yet my vindication is with the Lord,
and my reward is with my God.
who formed me from the womb to be his servant,
to bring Jacob back to him
so that Israel might be gathered to him;
for I am honored in the sight of the Lord,
and my God is my strength—
“It is not enough for you to be my servant
raising up the tribes of Jacob
and restoring the protected ones of Israel.
I will also make you a light for the nations,f
to be my salvation to the ends of the earth.”g
the Redeemerh of Israel, his Holy One, says
to one who is despised,
to a servant of rulers:
“Kings will see, princes will stand up,
and theyB will all bow down
because of the Lord, who is faithful,
the Holy One of Israelj—and he has chosen you.”k
I will answer you in a time of favor,
and I will help you in the day of salvation.l
I will keep you, and I will appoint you
to be a covenant for the people,m
to restore the land,
to make them possess the desolate inheritances,
9 saying to the prisoners, “Come out,”n
and to those who are in darkness, “Show yourselves.”
They will feed along the pathways,
and their pastures will be on all the barren heights.o
10 They will not hunger or thirst,
the scorching heat or sun will not strike them;
for their compassionate one will guide them,
and lead them to springs.p
11 I will make all my mountains into a road,
and my highways will be raised up.q
12 See, these will come from far away,
from the north and from the west,C,r
and from the land of Sinim.D,E
13 Shout for joy, you heavens!s
Earth, rejoice!
Mountains break into joyful shouts!
For the Lord has comforted his people,t
and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.u
14 Zion says, “The Lord has abandoned me;
the Lord has forgotten me!”
15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child,
or lack compassion for the child of her womb?
Even if these forget,
yet I will not forget you.
16 Look, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands;v
your walls are continually before me.
17 Your buildersF hurry;
those who destroy and devastate you will leave you.
They all gather together; they come to you.a
As I live”—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
“you will wear all your childrenA as jewelry,
and put them on as a bride does.
19 For your waste and desolate places
and your land marked by ruins
will now be indeed too small for the inhabitants,b
and those who swallowed you up will be far away.
20 Yet as you listen, the children
that you have been deprived of will say,
‘This place is too small for me;
make room for me so that I may settle.’c
21 Then you will say within yourself,
‘Who fathered these for me?
I was deprived of my children and unable to conceive,
exiled and wandering—
but who brought them up?
See, I was left by myself—
but these, where did they come from?’ ”B
22 This is what the Lord God says:
Look, I will lift up my hand to the nations,
and raise my banner to the peoples.d
They will bring your sons in their arms,
and your daughters will be carried on their shoulders.e
23 Kings will be your guardians
and their queensC your nursing mothers.f
They will bow down to you
with their faces to the ground
and lick the dust at your feet.g
Then you will know that I am the Lord;h
those who put their hope in me
will not be put to shame.i
24 Can the prey be taken from a mighty man,
or the captives of a tyrantD be delivered?
25 For this is what the Lord says:
“Even the captives of a mighty man will be taken,
and the prey of a tyrant will be delivered;
I will contend with the one who contends with you,
and I will save your children.
26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,j
and they will be drunk with their own blood
as with sweet wine.
Then all humanity will know
that I, the Lord, am your Savior,k
50 This is what the Lord says:
Where is your mother’s divorce certificate
that I used to send her away?n
Or to which of my creditors did I sell you?o
Look, you were sold for your iniquities,p
and your mother was sent away
because of your transgressions.
2 Why was no one there when I came?
Why was there no one to answer when I called?
Is my arm too weak to redeem?q
Or do I have no power to rescue?
Look, I dry up the sea by my rebuke;r
I turn the rivers into a wilderness;
their fish rot because of lack of water
and die of thirst.
3 I dress the heavens in black
and make sackcloth their covering.s
4 The Lord God has given me
the tongue of those who are instructedt
to know how to sustain the weary with a word.
He awakens me each morning;
he awakens my ear to listen like those being instructed.u
5 The Lord God has opened my ear,
and I was not rebellious;
I did not turn back.v
6 I gave my back to those who beat me,
and my cheeks to those who tore out my beard.
I did not hide my face from scorn and spitting.a
therefore I have not been humiliated;
therefore I have set my face like flint,b
and I know I will not be put to shame.
8 The one who vindicates me is near;c
who will contend with me?
Let us confront each other.A
Who has a case against me?B
Let him come near me!
9 In truth, the Lord God will help me;
who will condemn me?d
Indeed, all of them will wear out like a garment;
a moth will devour them.e
10 Who among you fears the Lord
and listens to his servant?f
Who among you walks in darkness,
and has no light?
Let him trust in the name of the Lord;
let him lean on his God.
11 Look, all you who kindle a fire,
who encircle yourselves withC torches;
walk in the light of your fire
and of the torches you have lit!
This is what you’ll get from my hand:
you will lie down in a place of torment.

About Christian Standard BibleThe Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others. The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today. The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths. The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible. |
