their portion is cursed in the land;

no treader turns toward their vineyards.

Job 24:18–24 — The New International Version (NIV)

18 “Yet they are foam on the surface of the water;

their portion of the land is cursed,

so that no one goes to the vineyards.

19 As heat and drought snatch away the melted snow,

so the grave snatches away those who have sinned.

20 The womb forgets them,

the worm feasts on them;

the wicked are no longer remembered

but are broken like a tree.

21 They prey on the barren and childless woman,

and to the widow they show no kindness.

22 But God drags away the mighty by his power;

though they become established, they have no assurance of life.

23 He may let them rest in a feeling of security,

but his eyes are on their ways.

24 For a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone;

they are brought low and gathered up like all others;

they are cut off like heads of grain.

Job 24:18–24 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

18 He is swift as the waters;

Their portion is cursed in the earth:

He beholdeth not the way of the vineyards.

19 Drought and heat consume the snow waters:

So doth the grave those which have sinned.

20 The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him;

He shall be no more remembered;

And wickedness shall be broken as a tree.

21 He evil entreateth the barren that beareth not:

And doeth not good to the widow.

22 He draweth also the mighty with his power:

He riseth up, and no man is sure of life.

23 Though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth;

Yet his eyes are upon their ways.

24 They are exalted for a little while, but are gone

And brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other,

And cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.

Job 24:18–24 — New Living Translation (NLT)

18 “But they disappear like foam down a river.

Everything they own is cursed,

and they are afraid to enter their own vineyards.

19 The grave consumes sinners

just as drought and heat consume snow.

20 Their own mothers will forget them.

Maggots will find them sweet to eat.

No one will remember them.

Wicked people are broken like a tree in the storm.

21 They cheat the woman who has no son to help her.

They refuse to help the needy widow.

22 “God, in his power, drags away the rich.

They may rise high, but they have no assurance of life.

23 They may be allowed to live in security,

but God is always watching them.

24 And though they are great now,

in a moment they will be gone like all others,

cut off like heads of grain.

Job 24:18–24 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

18 “They should be swift on the face of the waters,

Their portion should be cursed in the earth,

So that no one would turn into the way of their vineyards.

19 As drought and heat consume the snow waters,

So the grave consumes those who have sinned.

20 The womb should forget him,

The worm should feed sweetly on him;

He should be remembered no more,

And wickedness should be broken like a tree.

21 For he preys on the barren who do not bear,

And does no good for the widow.

22 “But God draws the mighty away with His power;

He rises up, but no man is sure of life.

23 He gives them security, and they rely on it;

Yet His eyes are on their ways.

24 They are exalted for a little while,

Then they are gone.

They are brought low;

They are taken out of the way like all others;

They dry out like the heads of grain.

Job 24:18–24 — New Century Version (NCV)

18 “They are like foam floating on the water.

Their part of the land is cursed;

no one uses the road that goes by their vineyards.

19 As heat and dryness quickly melt the snow,

so the grave quickly takes away the sinners.

20 Their mothers forget them,

and worms will eat their bodies.

They will not be remembered,

so wickedness is broken in pieces like a stick.

21 These evil people abuse women who cannot have children

and show no kindness to widows.

22 But God drags away the strong by his power.

Even though they seem strong, they do not know how long they will live.

23 God may let these evil people feel safe,

but he is watching their ways.

24 For a little while they are important, and then they die;

they are laid low and buried like everyone else;

they are cut off like the heads of grain.

Job 24:18–24 — American Standard Version (ASV)

18 Swiftly they pass away upon the face of the waters;

Their portion is cursed in the earth:

They turn not into the way of the vineyards.

19 Drought and heat consume the snow waters:

So doth Sheol those that have sinned.

20 The womb shall forget him;

The worm shall feed sweetly on him;

He shall be no more remembered;

And unrighteousness shall be broken as a tree.

21 He devoureth the barren that beareth not,

And doeth not good to the widow.

22 Yet God preserveth the mighty by his power:

He riseth up that hath no assurance of life.

23 God giveth them to be in security, and they rest thereon;

And his eyes are upon their ways.

24 They are exalted; yet a little while, and they are gone;

Yea, they are brought low, they are taken out of the way as all others,

And are cut off as the tops of the ears of grain.

Job 24:18–24 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

18 He is swift on the face of the waters; their portion is cursed on the earth: he turneth not unto the way of the vineyards. 19 Drought and heat consume snow waters; so doth Sheol those that have sinned. 20 The womb forgetteth him; the worm feedeth sweetly on him: he shall be no more remembered; and unrighteousness is broken as a tree, — 21 He that despoileth the barren that beareth not, and doeth not good to the widow: 22 He draweth also the mighty with his power; he riseth up, and no man is sure of life. 23 God setteth him in safety, and he resteth thereon; but his eyes are upon their ways. 24 They are exalted for a little, and are no more; they are laid low; like all other are they gathered, and are cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.

Job 24:18–24 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

18 Such people are like scum on the surface of the water.

Their property is cursed in the land.

People do not travel the road that goes to their vineyards.

19 ⸤Just as⸥ drought and heat steal water from snow,

so the grave steals people who sin.

20 The womb forgets them.

Worms feast on them.

No one remembers them anymore,

and wickedness is snapped like a twig.

21 These men take advantage of childless women.

These men show no kindness to widows.

22 ⸤God⸥ will drag away ⸤these⸥ mighty men by his power.

These people may prosper,

but they will never feel secure about life.

23 ⸤God⸥ may let them feel confident and self-reliant,

but his eyes are on their ways.

24 ⸤Such people⸥ may be prosperous for a little while,

but then they’re gone.

They are brought down low and disappear like everything else.

They wither like heads of grain.

Job 24:18–24 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

18 They float on the surface of the water.

Their section of the land is cursed,

so that they never go to their vineyards.

19 As dry ground and heat snatch away the melted snow,

so Sheol steals those who have sinned.

20 The womb forgets them;

worms feed on them;

they are remembered no more.

So injustice is broken like a tree.

21 They prey on the childless woman who is unable to conceive,

and do not deal kindly with the widow.

22 Yet God drags away the mighty by His power;

when He rises up, they have no assurance of life.

23 He gives them a sense of security, so they can rely on it,

but His eyes watch over their ways.

24 They are exalted for a moment, then they are gone;

they are brought low and shrivel up like everything else.

They wither like heads of grain.

Job 24:18–24 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

18 “Swift are they on the face of the waters;

their portion in the land is cursed;

no treader turns toward their vineyards.

19 Drought and heat snatch away the snow waters;

so does Sheol those who have sinned.

20 The womb forgets them;

the worm finds them sweet;

they are no longer remembered;

so wickedness is broken like a tree.

21 “They harm the childless woman,

and do no good to the widow.

22 Yet God prolongs the life of the mighty by his power;

they rise up when they despair of life.

23 He gives them security, and they are supported;

his eyes are upon their ways.

24 They are exalted a little while, and then are gone;

they wither and fade like the mallow;

they are cut off like the heads of grain.

Job 24:18–24 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

18 “He himself is swift on the water’s surface;

their portion is cursed in the land.

No one turns toward the path of their vineyards.

19 Drought and heat snatch away the snow waters,

like Sheol snatches away those who have sinned.

20 The womb forgets him.

The maggot feasts on him until he is no longer remembered,

and wickedness is broken like a tree.

21 He feeds on the barren, who does not have a child,

and does no good to the widow.

22 Yet he carries off the tyrants by his strength;

if he rises up, then he cannot be certain of life.

23 He gives security to him, and he is supported,

but his eyes are upon their ways.

24 They are exalted a little while, then they are gone.

And they are brought low; they are cut off like all others,

and like the heads of grain they wither away.

Job 24:18–24 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

18 “But sinners are like bubbles on the surface of water.

Their share of the land is under God’s curse.

So no one goes to their vineyards.

19 Melted snow disappears when the air is hot and dry.

And sinners disappear when they go down into their graves.

20 Even their mothers forget them.

The worms in their graves eat them up.

No one remembers sinful people anymore.

They are cut down like trees.

21 They mistreat women who aren’t able to have children.

They aren’t kind to widows.

22 But God is powerful.

He even drags away people who are strong.

When he rises up against them,

they can never be sure they are safe.

23 God might let them rest and feel secure.

But his eyes see how they live.

24 For a little while they are honored.

Then they are gone.

They are brought low.

And they die like everyone else.

They are cut off like heads of grain.

Job 24:18–24 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

18 “They are insignificant on the surface of the water;

Their portion is cursed on the earth.

They do not turn toward the vineyards.

19 Drought and heat consume the snow waters,

So does Sheol those who have sinned.

20 “A mother will forget him;

The worm feeds sweetly till he is no longer remembered.

And wickedness will be broken like a tree.

21 “He wrongs the barren woman

And does no good for the widow.

22 “But He drags off the valiant by His power;

He rises, but no one has assurance of life.

23 “He provides them with security, and they are supported;

And His eyes are on their ways.

24 “They are exalted a little while, then they are gone;

Moreover, they are brought low and like everything gathered up;

Even like the heads of grain they are cut off.
