Psalm 78:15–22 — The New International Version (NIV)

15 He split the rocks in the wilderness

and gave them water as abundant as the seas;

16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag

and made water flow down like rivers.

17 But they continued to sin against him,

rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.

18 They willfully put God to the test

by demanding the food they craved.

19 They spoke against God;

they said, “Can God really

spread a table in the wilderness?

20 True, he struck the rock,

and water gushed out,

streams flowed abundantly,

but can he also give us bread?

Can he supply meat for his people?”

21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;

his fire broke out against Jacob,

and his wrath rose against Israel,

22 for they did not believe in God

or trust in his deliverance.

Psalm 78:15–22 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness,

And gave them drink as out of the great depths.

16 He brought streams also out of the rock,

And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 And they sinned yet more against him

By provoking the most High in the wilderness.

18 And they tempted God in their heart

By asking meat for their lust.

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said,

Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out,

And the streams overflowed;

Can he give bread also?

Can he provide flesh for his people?

21 Therefore the Lord heard this, and was wroth:

So a fire was kindled against Jacob,

And anger also came up against Israel;

22 Because they believed not in God,

And trusted not in his salvation:

Psalm 78:15–22 — New Living Translation (NLT)

15 He split open the rocks in the wilderness

to give them water, as from a gushing spring.

16 He made streams pour from the rock,

making the waters flow down like a river!

17 Yet they kept on sinning against him,

rebelling against the Most High in the desert.

18 They stubbornly tested God in their hearts,

demanding the foods they craved.

19 They even spoke against God himself, saying,

“God can’t give us food in the wilderness.

20 Yes, he can strike a rock so water gushes out,

but he can’t give his people bread and meat.”

21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious.

The fire of his wrath burned against Jacob.

Yes, his anger rose against Israel,

22 for they did not believe God

or trust him to care for them.

Psalm 78:15–22 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

15 He split the rocks in the wilderness,

And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.

16 He also brought streams out of the rock,

And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 But they sinned even more against Him

By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.

18 And they tested God in their heart

By asking for the food of their fancy.

19 Yes, they spoke against God:

They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

20 Behold, He struck the rock,

So that the waters gushed out,

And the streams overflowed.

Can He give bread also?

Can He provide meat for His people?”

21 Therefore the Lord heard this and was furious;

So a fire was kindled against Jacob,

And anger also came up against Israel,

22 Because they did not believe in God,

And did not trust in His salvation.

Psalm 78:15–22 — New Century Version (NCV)

15 He split the rocks in the desert

and gave them more than enough water, as if from the deep ocean.

16 He brought streams out of the rock

and caused water to flow down like rivers.

17 But the people continued to sin against him;

in the desert they turned against God Most High.

18 They decided to test God

by asking for the food they wanted.

19 Then they spoke against God,

saying, “Can God prepare food in the desert?

20 When he hit the rock, water poured out

and rivers flowed down.

But can he give us bread also?

Will he provide his people with meat?”

21 When the Lord heard them, he was very angry.

His anger was like fire to the people of Jacob;

his anger grew against the people of Israel.

22 They had not believed God

and had not trusted him to save them.

Psalm 78:15–22 — American Standard Version (ASV)

15 He clave rocks in the wilderness,

And gave them drink abundantly as out of the depths.

16 He brought streams also out of the rock,

And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 Yet went they on still to sin against him,

To rebel against the Most High in the desert.

18 And they tempted God in their heart

By asking food according to their desire.

19 Yea, they spake against God;

They said, Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

20 Behold, he smote the rock, so that waters gushed out,

And streams overflowed;

Can he give bread also?

Will he provide flesh for his people?

21 Therefore Jehovah heard, and was wroth;

And a fire was kindled against Jacob,

And anger also went up against Israel;

22 Because they believed not in God,

And trusted not in his salvation.

Psalm 78:15–22 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

15 He clave rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the depths, abundantly; 16 And he brought streams out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. 17 Yet they still went on sinning against him, provoking the Most High in the desert; 18 And they tempted •God in their heart, by asking meat for their lust; 19 And they spoke against God: they said, Is •God able to prepare a table in the wilderness? 20 Behold, he smote the rock, and waters gushed out, and streams overflowed; is he able to give bread also, or provide flesh for his people? 21 Therefore Jehovah heard, and was wroth; and fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also went up against Israel: 22 Because they believed not in God, and confided not in his salvation;

Psalm 78:15–22 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

15 He split rocks in the desert.

He gave them plenty to drink, an ocean of water.

16 He made streams come out of a rock.

He made the water flow like rivers.

17 They continued to sin against him,

to rebel in the desert against the Most High.

18 They deliberately tested God by demanding the food they craved.

19 They spoke against God by saying,

“Can God prepare a banquet in the desert?

20 True, he did strike a rock,

and water did gush out,

and the streams did overflow.

But can he also give us bread or provide us, his people, with meat?”

21 When the Lord heard this, he became furious.

His fire burned against Jacob

and his anger flared up at Israel

22 because they did not believe God

or trust him to save them.

Psalm 78:15–22 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

15 He split rocks in the wilderness

and gave them drink as abundant as the depths.

16 He brought streams out of the stone

and made water flow down like rivers.

17 But they continued to sin against Him,

rebelling in the desert against the Most High.

18 They deliberately tested God,

demanding the food they craved.

19 They spoke against God, saying,

“Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?

20 Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;

torrents overflowed.

But can He also provide bread

or furnish meat for His people?”

21 Therefore, the Lord heard and became furious;

then fire broke out against Jacob,

and anger flared up against Israel

22 because they did not believe God

or rely on His salvation.

Psalm 78:15–22 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

15 He split rocks open in the wilderness,

and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.

16 He made streams come out of the rock,

and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

17 Yet they sinned still more against him,

rebelling against the Most High in the desert.

18 They tested God in their heart

by demanding the food they craved.

19 They spoke against God, saying,

“Can God spread a table in the wilderness?

20 Even though he struck the rock so that water gushed out

and torrents overflowed,

can he also give bread,

or provide meat for his people?”

21 Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of rage;

a fire was kindled against Jacob,

his anger mounted against Israel,

22 because they had no faith in God,

and did not trust his saving power.

Psalm 78:15–22 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

15 He caused rocks to split in the wilderness

and provided drink abundantly as from the depths.

16 And he brought streams out of the rock

and caused water to flow down like rivers.

17 But they sinned still further against him

by rebelling against the Most High in the desert.

18 And they tested God in their heart

by asking food for their craving.

19 And they spoke against God.

They said, “Is God able

to prepare a table in the wilderness?

20 Yes, he struck the rock and water flowed

and streams gushed out,

but can he also give food

or provide meat for his people?”

21 Therefore Yahweh heard

and he was very angry,

and a fire was kindled against Jacob,

and his anger also rose up against Israel,

22 because they did not believe God,

and they did not trust his salvation.

Psalm 78:15–22 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

15 He broke the rocks open in the desert.

He gave them as much water as there is in the oceans.

16 He brought streams out of a rocky cliff.

He made water flow down like rivers.

17 But they continued to sin against him.

In the desert they refused to obey the Most High God.

18 They were stubborn and put God to the test.

They ordered him to give them the food they longed for.

19 They spoke against God. They said,

“Can God put food on a table in the desert?

20 When he struck the rock, streams of water poured out.

Huge amounts of water flowed down.

But can he also give us food?

Can he supply meat for his people?”

21 When the Lord heard what they said, he was very angry.

His anger broke out like fire against the people of Jacob.

He became very angry with Israel.

22 That was because they didn’t believe in God.

They didn’t trust in his power to save them.

Psalm 78:15–22 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

15 He split the rocks in the wilderness

And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.

16 He brought forth streams also from the rock

And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 Yet they still continued to sin against Him,

To rebel against the Most High in the desert.

18 And in their heart they put God to the test

By asking food according to their desire.

19 Then they spoke against God;

They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

20 Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out,

And streams were overflowing;

Can He give bread also?

Will He provide meat for His people?”

21 Therefore the Lord heard and was full of wrath;

And a fire was kindled against Jacob

And anger also mounted against Israel,

22 Because they did not believe in God

And did not trust in His salvation.
