Seek the Lord and Live

Hear this word that I ktake up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel:

“Fallen, no more to rise,

is lthe virgin Israel;

forsaken on her land,

with none to raise her up.”

For thus says the Lord God:

“The city that went out a thousand

shall have a hundred left,

and that which went out a hundred

shall have ten left

to the house of Israel.”

For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:

m“Seek me and live;

but do not seek nBethel,

and do not enter into nGilgal

or cross over to oBeersheba;

for nGilgal shall surely go into exile,

and nBethel shall come to nothing.”

mSeek the Lord and live,

plest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph,

and it devour, with none to quench it for nBethel,

O qyou who turn justice to wormwood1

and cast down righteousness to the earth!

Amos 5:1–7 — The New International Version (NIV)

Hear this word, Israel, this lament I take up concerning you:

“Fallen is Virgin Israel,

never to rise again,

deserted in her own land,

with no one to lift her up.”

This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Israel:

“Your city that marches out a thousand strong

will have only a hundred left;

your town that marches out a hundred strong

will have only ten left.”

This is what the Lord says to Israel:

“Seek me and live;

do not seek Bethel,

do not go to Gilgal,

do not journey to Beersheba.

For Gilgal will surely go into exile,

and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.”

Seek the Lord and live,

or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire;

it will devour them,

and Bethel will have no one to quench it.

There are those who turn justice into bitterness

and cast righteousness to the ground.

Amos 5:1–7 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Hear ye this word which I take up against you,

Even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise:

She is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

For thus saith the Lord God;

The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred,

And that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten,

To the house of Israel.

For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel,

Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

But seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal,

And pass not to Beer-sheba:

For Gilgal shall surely go into captivity,

And Beth-el shall come to nought.

Seek the Lord, and ye shall live;

Lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph,

And devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el.

Ye who turn judgment to wormwood,

And leave off righteousness in the earth,

Amos 5:1–7 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Listen, you people of Israel! Listen to this funeral song I am singing:

“The virgin Israel has fallen,

never to rise again!

She lies abandoned on the ground,

with no one to help her up.”

The Sovereign Lord says:

“When a city sends a thousand men to battle,

only a hundred will return.

When a town sends a hundred,

only ten will come back alive.”

Now this is what the Lord says to the family of Israel:

“Come back to me and live!

Don’t worship at the pagan altars at Bethel;

don’t go to the shrines at Gilgal or Beersheba.

For the people of Gilgal will be dragged off into exile,

and the people of Bethel will be reduced to nothing.”

Come back to the Lord and live!

Otherwise, he will roar through Israel like a fire,

devouring you completely.

Your gods in Bethel

won’t be able to quench the flames.

You twist justice, making it a bitter pill for the oppressed.

You treat the righteous like dirt.

Amos 5:1–7 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

Hear this word which I take up against you, a lamentation, O house of Israel:

The virgin of Israel has fallen;

She will rise no more.

She lies forsaken on her land;

There is no one to raise her up.

For thus says the Lord God:

“The city that goes out by a thousand

Shall have a hundred left,

And that which goes out by a hundred

Shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”

For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:

“Seek Me and live;

But do not seek Bethel,

Nor enter Gilgal,

Nor pass over to Beersheba;

For Gilgal shall surely go into captivity,

And Bethel shall come to nothing.

Seek the Lord and live,

Lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph,

And devour it,

With no one to quench it in Bethel—

You who turn justice to wormwood,

And lay righteousness to rest in the earth!”

Amos 5:1–7 — New Century Version (NCV)

Listen to this funeral song that I sing about you, people of Israel.

“The young girl Israel has fallen,

and she will not rise up again.

She was left alone in her own land,

and there is no one to help her up.”

This is what the Lord God says:

“If a thousand soldiers leave a city,

only a hundred will return;

if a hundred soldiers leave a city,

only ten will return.”

This is what the Lord says to the nation of Israel:

“Come to me and live.

But do not look in Bethel

or go to Gilgal,

and do not go down to Beersheba.

The people of Gilgal will be taken away as captives,

and Bethel will become nothing.”

Come to the Lord and live,

or he will move like fire against the descendants of Joseph.

The fire will burn Bethel,

and there will be no one to put it out.

You turn justice upside down,

and you throw on the ground what is right.

Amos 5:1–7 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Hear ye this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel. The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is cast down upon her land; there is none to raise her up. For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left, to the house of Israel.

For thus saith Jehovah unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live; but seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Beth-el shall come to nought. Seek Jehovah, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el. Ye who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth,

Amos 5:1–7 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Hear this word, a lamentation, which I take up against you, O house of Israel. The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more arise: she is cast down upon her land; there is none to raise her up. For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left, for the house of Israel.

For thus saith Jehovah unto the house of Israel: Seek ye me, and ye shall live. And seek not Bethel, neither go to Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought. Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth,

Amos 5:1–7 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Listen to this message, this funeral song that I sing about you, nation of Israel:

The people of Israel have fallen,

never to rise again.

They lie abandoned in their own land.

There is no one to help them.

This is what the Almighty Lord says:

The city that sends 1,000 troops off to war

will have ⸤only⸥ 100 left.

The one that sends 100 troops off to war

will have ⸤only⸥ 10 left for the nation of Israel.

This is what the Lord says to the nation of Israel:

Search for me and live!

But don’t search ⸤for me⸥ at Bethel.

Don’t go to Gilgal.

Don’t travel to Beersheba.

Gilgal will certainly go into exile.

Bethel will come to nothing.

Search for the Lord and live!

If you don’t, he will spread like a fire through the house of Joseph

and burn it down.

Bethel will have no one to put it out.

You, Israel, turn justice into poison

and throw righteousness on the ground.

Amos 5:1–7 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Listen to this message that I am singing for you, a lament, house of Israel:

She has fallen;

Virgin Israel will never rise again.

She lies abandoned on her land,

with no one to raise her up.

For the Lord God says:

The city that marches out a thousand strong

will have only a hundred left,

and the one that marches out a hundred strong

will have only ten left in the house of Israel.

For the Lord says to the house of Israel:

Seek Me and live!

Do not seek Bethel

or go to Gilgal

or journey to Beer-sheba,

for Gilgal will certainly go into exile,

and Bethel will come to nothing.

Seek Yahweh and live,

or He will spread like fire

throughout the house of Joseph;

it will consume everything,

with no one at Bethel to extinguish it.

Those who turn justice into wormwood

throw righteousness to the ground.

Amos 5:1–7 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Hear this word that I take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel:

Fallen, no more to rise,

is maiden Israel;

forsaken on her land,

with no one to raise her up.

For thus says the Lord God:

The city that marched out a thousand

shall have a hundred left,

and that which marched out a hundred

shall have ten left.

For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:

Seek me and live;

but do not seek Bethel,

and do not enter into Gilgal

or cross over to Beer-sheba;

for Gilgal shall surely go into exile,

and Bethel shall come to nothing.

Seek the Lord and live,

or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire,

and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it.

Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood,

and bring righteousness to the ground!

Amos 5:1–7 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Hear this word that I am going to intone over you as a lament, O house of Israel! Virgin Israel has fallen and will not rise again. She is deserted on her land; there is no one to raise her up. For thus says my Lord Yahweh, “The city that marches out with a thousand will only have a hundred left. And the one that marches out with a hundred will only have ten left for the house of Israel.” For thus says Yahweh to the house of Israel, “Seek me so that you may live.” But do not seek Bethel or go to Gilgal or cross over to Beersheba, for Gilgal will certainly go into exile and Bethel will come to disaster.” Seek Yahweh so that you may live, so that he will not break out like a fire against the house of Joseph! And it will devour, with none to quench it for Bethel. Ah, you who turn justice into wormwood and hurl righteousness to the ground!

Amos 5:1–7 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

People of Israel, listen to the Lord’s message. Hear my song of sadness about you. I say,

“The people of Israel have fallen.

They will never get up again.

They are deserted in their own land.

No one can lift them up.”

The Lord and King says,

“A thousand soldiers will march out from a city in Israel.

But only a hundred will return.

A hundred soldiers will march out from a town.

But only ten will come back.”

The Lord speaks to the people of Israel. He says,

“Look to me and live.

Do not look to Bethel.

Do not go to Gilgal.

Do not travel to Beersheba.

The people of Gilgal will be taken away as prisoners.

Nothing will be left of Bethel.”

Israel, look to the Lord and live.

If you don’t, he will sweep through

the people of Joseph like a fire.

It will burn everything up.

And Bethel won’t have anyone to put it out.

You turn what is fair into something bitter.

What is right you throw down to the ground.

Amos 5:1–7 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Hear this word which I take up for you as a dirge, O house of Israel:

She has fallen, she will not rise again

The virgin Israel.

She lies neglected on her land;

There is none to raise her up.

For thus says the Lord God,

“The city which goes forth a thousand strong

Will have a hundred left,

And the one which goes forth a hundred strong

Will have ten left to the house of Israel.”

For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel,

Seek Me that you may live.

“But do not resort to Bethel

And do not come to Gilgal,

Nor cross over to Beersheba;

For Gilgal will certainly go into captivity

And Bethel will come to trouble.

Seek the Lord that you may live,

Or He will break forth like a fire, O house of Joseph,

And it will consume with none to quench it for Bethel,

For those who turn justice into wormwood

And cast righteousness down to the earth.”
