Isaiah 9:3–5 — The New International Version (NIV)

You have enlarged the nation

and increased their joy;

they rejoice before you

as people rejoice at the harvest,

as warriors rejoice

when dividing the plunder.

For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,

you have shattered

the yoke that burdens them,

the bar across their shoulders,

the rod of their oppressor.

Every warrior’s boot used in battle

and every garment rolled in blood

will be destined for burning,

will be fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy:

They joy before thee according to the joy in harvest,

And as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder,

The rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise,

And garments rolled in blood;

But this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — New Living Translation (NLT)

You will enlarge the nation of Israel,

and its people will rejoice.

They will rejoice before you

as people rejoice at the harvest

and like warriors dividing the plunder.

For you will break the yoke of their slavery

and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders.

You will break the oppressor’s rod,

just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian.

The boots of the warrior

and the uniforms bloodstained by war

will all be burned.

They will be fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

You have multiplied the nation

And increased its joy;

They rejoice before You

According to the joy of harvest,

As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

For You have broken the yoke of his burden

And the staff of his shoulder,

The rod of his oppressor,

As in the day of Midian.

For every warrior’s sandal from the noisy battle,

And garments rolled in blood,

Will be used for burning and fuel of fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — New Century Version (NCV)

God, you have caused the nation to grow

and made the people happy.

And they have shown their happiness to you,

like the joy during harvest time,

like the joy of people

taking what they have won in war.

Like the time you defeated Midian,

you have taken away their heavy load

and the heavy pole from their backs

and the rod the enemy used to punish them.

Every boot that marched in battle

and every uniform stained with blood

has been thrown into the fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased their joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as in the day of Midian. For all the armor of the armed man in the tumult, and the garments rolled in blood, shall be for burning, for fuel of fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Thou hast multiplied the nation, hast increased its joy: they joy before thee like to the joy in harvest; as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. For every boot of him that is shod for the tumult, and the garment rolled in blood, shall be for burning, fuel for fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

You will expand the nation and increase its happiness.

It will be happy in your presence

like those who celebrate the harvest

or rejoice when dividing loot.

You will break the yokethat burdens them,

the bar that is across their shoulders,

and the stick used by their oppressor,

as ⸤you did in the battle against⸥ Midian.

Every warrior’s boot marching to the sound of battle

and every garment rolled in blood

will be burned as fuel in the fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

You have enlarged the nation

and increased its joy.

The people have rejoiced before You

as they rejoice at harvest time

and as they rejoice when dividing spoils.

For You have shattered their oppressive yoke

and the rod on their shoulders,

the staff of their oppressor,

just as You did on the day of Midian.

For the trampling boot of battle

and the bloodied garments of war

will be burned as fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

You have multiplied the nation,

you have increased its joy;

they rejoice before you

as with joy at the harvest,

as people exult when dividing plunder.

For the yoke of their burden,

and the bar across their shoulders,

the rod of their oppressor,

you have broken as on the day of Midian.

For all the boots of the tramping warriors

and all the garments rolled in blood

shall be burned as fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

You have made the nation numerous;

you have not made the joy great.

They rejoice in your presence as with joy at the harvest,

as they rejoice when they divide plunder.

For you have shattered the yoke of its burden

and the stick of its shoulder,

the rod of its oppressor, on the day of Midian.

For every boot that marches and shakes the earth

and garment rolled in blood

will be for burning—fire fuel.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Lord, you will make our nation larger.

You will increase their joy.

They will show you how glad they are.

They will be as glad as people are at harvest time.

They will be as glad as soldiers are

when they share the things they’ve taken after a battle.

You set Israel free from Midian long ago.

In the same way, you will break

the heavy yoke that weighs Israel down.

You will break the wooden beams that are on their shoulders.

You will break the rods of those who strike them down.

Every fighting man’s boot that is used in battle will be burned up.

So will every piece of clothes

that is covered with blood.

All of them will be thrown into the fire.

Isaiah 9:3–5 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

You shall multiply the nation,

You shall increase their gladness;

They will be glad in Your presence

As with the gladness of harvest,

As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,

The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.

For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,

And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
