Isaiah 33:14–16 — The New International Version (NIV)

14 The sinners in Zion are terrified;

trembling grips the godless:

“Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?

Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?”

15 Those who walk righteously

and speak what is right,

who reject gain from extortion

and keep their hands from accepting bribes,

who stop their ears against plots of murder

and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—

16 they are the ones who will dwell on the heights,

whose refuge will be the mountain fortress.

Their bread will be supplied,

and water will not fail them.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;

Fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites.

Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire?

Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?

15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly;

He that despiseth the gain of oppressions,

That shaketh his hands from holding of bribes,

That stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood,

And shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;

16 He shall dwell on high:

His place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks:

Bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — New Living Translation (NLT)

14 The sinners in Jerusalem shake with fear.

Terror seizes the godless.

“Who can live with this devouring fire?” they cry.

“Who can survive this all-consuming fire?”

15 Those who are honest and fair,

who refuse to profit by fraud,

who stay far away from bribes,

who refuse to listen to those who plot murder,

who shut their eyes to all enticement to do wrong—

16 these are the ones who will dwell on high.

The rocks of the mountains will be their fortress.

Food will be supplied to them,

and they will have water in abundance.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;

Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites:

“Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire?

Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”

15 He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly,

He who despises the gain of oppressions,

Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes,

Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed,

And shuts his eyes from seeing evil:

16 He will dwell on high;

His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks;

Bread will be given him,

His water will be sure.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — New Century Version (NCV)

14 The sinners in Jerusalem are afraid;

those who are separated from God shake with fear.

They say, “Can any of us live through this fire that destroys?

Who can live near this fire that burns on and on?”

15 A person who does what is right

and speaks what is right,

who refuses to take money unfairly,

who refuses to take money to hurt others,

who does not listen to plans of murder,

who refuses to think about evil—

16 this is the kind of person who will be safe.

He will be protected as he would be in a high, walled city.

He will always have bread,

and he will not run out of water.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — American Standard Version (ASV)

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling hath seized the godless ones: Who among us can dwell with the devouring fire? who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings? 15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from taking a bribe, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from looking upon evil: 16 He shall dwell on high; his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks; his bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling hath surprised the hypocrites: Who among us shall dwell with the consuming fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting flames? 15 —He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from taking hold of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil: 16 he shall dwell on high, the fortresses of the rocks shall be his high retreat; bread shall be given him, his water shall be sure.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

14 The sinners in Zion are terrified.

Trembling seizes the ungodly.

Can any of us live through a fire that destroys?

Can any of us live through a fire that burns forever?

15 The person who does what is right and speaks the truth will live.

He rejects getting rich by extortion and refuses to take bribes.

He refuses to listen to those who are plotting murders.

He doesn’t look for evil things to do.

16 This person will live on high.

His stronghold will be a fortress made of rock.

He will have plenty of food

and a dependable supply of water.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;

trembling seizes the ungodly:

“Who among us can dwell with a consuming fire?

Who among us can dwell with ever-burning flames?”

15 The one who lives righteously

and speaks rightly,

who refuses gain from extortion,

whose hand never takes a bribe,

who stops his ears from listening to murderous plots

and shuts his eyes to avoid endorsing evil —

16 he will dwell on the heights;

his refuge will be the rocky fortresses,

his food provided, his water assured.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;

trembling has seized the godless:

“Who among us can live with the devouring fire?

Who among us can live with everlasting flames?”

15 Those who walk righteously and speak uprightly,

who despise the gain of oppression,

who wave away a bribe instead of accepting it,

who stop their ears from hearing of bloodshed

and shut their eyes from looking on evil,

16 they will live on the heights;

their refuge will be the fortresses of rocks;

their food will be supplied, their water assured.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

14 Sinners are afraid in Zion;

trembling has seized the godless:

“Who of us can live with devouring fire?

Who of us can live with everlasting consuming hearths?”

15 He who walks in righteousness

and speaks uprightness,

who rejects the gain of extortion,

who refuses a bribe,

who stops up his ears from hearing bloodshed

and shuts his eyes from seeing evil.

16 That one will live on the heights;

the fortresses of rocks will be his refuge.

His food will be given;

his waters will endure.

Isaiah 33:14–16 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

14 The sinners in Zion are terrified.

They tremble with fear.

They say, ‘Who of us can live through the Lord’s destroying fire?

Who of us can live through the fire that burns forever?’

15 A person must do what is right.

He must be honest and tell the truth.

He must not get rich by cheating others.

His hands must not receive money from those who want special favors.

He must not let his ears listen to plans to commit murder.

He must close his eyes to even thinking about doing what is evil.

16 A person like that will be kept safe.

It will be as if he were living on high mountains.

It will be as if he were living in a mountain fort.

He will have all of the food he needs.

And he will never run out of water.”

Isaiah 33:14–16 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

14 Sinners in Zion are terrified;

Trembling has seized the godless.

Who among us can live with the consuming fire?

Who among us can live with continual burning?”

15 He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity,

He who rejects unjust gain

And shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe;

He who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed

And shuts his eyes from looking upon evil;

16 He will dwell on the heights,

His refuge will be the impregnable rock;

His bread will be given him,

His water will be sure.
